The training sessions went well in Gonaives over the last two weeks
and we're starting training in Bel Air with teachers from Cité Soleil,
Bel Air and La Serre next Monday, at the Eglise Perpétuel Secours with
great cooperation from the Sisters and WFP.
Here's another anecdote for you: one of the teachers in Poteaux (rural
Gonaives) who had been most doubtful about finding alternatives to the
strap told our staff that his Grade Six class had 100% pass rate in
the state exams last June (the national rate is usually under 60%). In
the past he had quite good results but under threat of the stick.
This past year he completely eliminated corporal punishment, instead
setting up rules with the kids. He was pleased to announce this
success to all the other participating teachers in the recent
trainings.
UNICEF staff member Guirlene Chéry told me they considered the project
we just completed with them for street kids and peer educators was
"superb". She encouraged us to submit further projects. Maybe we'll
have a chance for some synergy along the way with YELE???
We're planning on submitting a plan to you soon for next year so as to
keep the momentum up with the YELE teacher training program, following
Ministry priorities and the results of the YELE study which are
turning out very interesting. People of all ages and walks of life
seem inspired to help improve education!!
