Social Development : Health

Canadian Mental Health Association (Canada)
The Canadian Mental Health Association is a voluntary organization and the only one to deal with all aspects of mental health and mental illness. CMHA is a national organization that can be found in communities of all sizes, in all provinces and territories, and a Division office in each province and territory. CMHA's grassroots programs are meant to ensure that people whose mental health is endangered will find the help needed to cope with crisis, regain confidence, and return to community, family and job. They combat mental health problems and emotional disorders through research and information services, sponsored research projects, and workshops, seminars, pamphlets, newsletters and resource centres. They also act as a social advocate to encourage public action and commitment to strengthen community mental health services, legislation and policies affecting services.

Centre for Prosperity and Autonomy (Lesotho)
Centre for Prosperity and Autonomy was created to assist in providing a better life for rural communities in Lesotho. It also has as mission support and training of youth and orphans and particularly in their income generating and artistic endeavours. Its first activity is the initiation of the Leaf Extract project which seeks to develop local income generating activities including tree planting, organic vegetable production, extraction of vegetable leaves to produce a protein vitamin rich supplement for underweight babies and people living with AIDS. To date our collaboration with local nutritionists and community chiefs, has provided us with the lists of many children 3 months to 5 years in need of the supplement in at least three communities where women are prepared to work together to pick indigenous vegetables, grow the 'exotic' vegetables and organize the distribution of the supplement to the children. Potential partners include the Network of People living with AIDS, Rural Self Help Development, SOS Children's Village outreach programme, GROW (a community project to promote healthy agriculture), the Food and Nutrition Co-ordinating Office.

The Mongolian Development Centre (Mongolia)
The Mongolian Development Centre (MDC) is dedicated to serving society by empowering individuals and families through education and training, to develop to the fullest their inherent intellectual, material and spiritual capabilities and potential. Projects are developed through a process of consultation that involves a profound and continuous exchange of ideas and opinions. The projects have a strong “demonstration effect” within a community whereby families not directly enrolled in a project are encouraged to undertake similar activities. MDC has primarily worked on child and family development issues resulting in two major Programs: 1) Child Development: Aims to develop the moral capabilities in children and junior youth and upgrade teachers’ capacity to work with children. The two projects under this program are “Enhancing the Learning Environment for Junior Youth” and “Early Childhood Character Development”. 2) Capacity Development of Families in their Neighborhoods: Develops the capacities of families to work in groups for the betterment of their neighborhoods. It includes the community development project that seeks to empower family groups to enhance their ability to be of service to society as well as enhance local food security and the nutritional content of the diet of low-income families and children. Several projects have been implemented in 5 different provinces since 1994.
