North America

Canada World Youth (Canada)
Canada World Youth is a national, non-governmental organization that provides young people under the age of 30, from Canada and around the world, with the opportunity to travel, live and work in different communities, to learn about local and international development, and to obtain important job skills for the future. Canada World Youth programs operate in Canada and counries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Central and Eastern Europe. Programs: Canada World Youth offers four different programs. The largest is the Youth Exchange Program which involves a reciprocal student exchange with participating countries. While abroad and in Canada, youths work for voluntary sector organizations for three to six months. The Canadian International Development Agency helps fund the program as well as exchange country partners, and thousands of donors across Canada.

Canadian Bureau for International Education (Canada)
The Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) is Canada's national organization dedicated exclusively to international education. CBIE's membership is composed of 110 colleges and universities across Canada, as well as corporate partners, non-governmental organizations, government agencies and individuals. A 21-member Board of Directors elected by members governs CBIE. CBIE is a non-profit, non-governmental organization with charitable status. CBIE's activities comprise advocacy, research and information services, training programs, scholarship management, professional development for international educators and a host of other services for member institutions and learners.

Canadian Centre for Philanthropy (Canada)
The Canadian Centre for Philanthropy is a national charitable organization dedicated to advancing the role and interests of the charitable sector for the benefit of Canadian communities. The Centre is a membership-based, leadership organization for charitable, voluntary organizations, and the corporations and foundations that support them. The Centre generates and gathers information and analysis about the environment in which Canadian charities operate. They help strengthen charitable, voluntary, and non-profit organizations through public affairs, research, information resources, and the Imagine program.

Canadian Crossroads International (Canada)
Canadian Crossroads International (CCI) is an international non-profit organization, supported by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), other government and non-government funders and many individual donors around the world. It is dedicated to building a constituency of global citizens committed to voluntarism, international development and social action in the new millennium. Some of their goals include: to promote cross-cultural understanding and sustainable development, to educate Canadian volunteers by providing them with opportunities to live and work in a developing country, as well as educating volunteers from developing countries by having them work in Canada or other developed counties, as well as to promote understanding of root causes of inequitable development.

Canadian Mental Health Association (Canada)
The Canadian Mental Health Association is a voluntary organization and the only one to deal with all aspects of mental health and mental illness. CMHA is a national organization that can be found in communities of all sizes, in all provinces and territories, and a Division office in each province and territory. CMHA's grassroots programs are meant to ensure that people whose mental health is endangered will find the help needed to cope with crisis, regain confidence, and return to community, family and job. They combat mental health problems and emotional disorders through research and information services, sponsored research projects, and workshops, seminars, pamphlets, newsletters and resource centres. They also act as a social advocate to encourage public action and commitment to strengthen community mental health services, legislation and policies affecting services.

Cowichan Community Land Trust (Canada)
The Cowichan Community Land Trust (CCLT), was formed by concerned residents who wish to help landowners find alternatives to the destruction of natural areas and wildlife habitat. CCLT is a non-profit society which raises funds through memberships and donations from individuals, businesses, government and foundations.

Cowichan Valley Intercultural & Immigrant Aid Society (Canada)
To build mutual respect, trust, support and education in the cultural diverse community of the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island. We provide service, information, and support to new immigrants and new Canadians for their integration into Canadian society. As well, we facilitate sharing on common issues across cultures. Some examples of such issues are: language acquisition, community access, immigration, employment & economic integration, cultural adjustment and preservation. We have served the community for over 22 years. Throughout the period, numerous services, programs, and functions have been offered to immigrants and the general public to promote social justice and unity in the community.

The Hiiye'yu Lelum (House of Friendship) Society provides health, social, recreational and cultural services to promote individual, family and community self-reliance. These services address the needs and aspirations of aboriginal people and focus on well-being within a cross-cultural context.

Northern Research Institute (Canada)
The Northern Research Institute, announced in 1989, opened at the Ayamdigut Campus of Yukon College in 1992, after several years of planning. Initially supported by assistance from the Donner Canada Foundation, the NRI's creation allowed Yukon College to formalize its institutional commitment to research. The Institute was conceived as a northern centre to promote, co-ordinate, and undertake research activities that complement the College's goal to pursue excellence in all areas of Yukon and Northern Studies.

Oxfam Canada (Canada)
Oxfam Canada is dedicated to creating self-sustaining programs in developing communities worldwide by focusing on health security, food security and democratic rights. Oxfam Canada works in partnership to build a global movement by helping to create self-sustaining communities. They raise and transfer material resources, work with popular organizations with the potential to affect social change, are a strong voice in Canada on the international and domestic aspects of global issues, promote and strengthen coalitions, networks and linkages, are a participatory organization, reflecting the values inherent in our mission and goals. Oxfam supports projects in which people can gain equality, social justice and democratic control over their lives.

Providence Farm (Canada)
Providence Farm is a therapeutic community where Horticultural Therapy and Vocational Rehabilitation are used as tools to provide programs for people with barriers to education and employment. The Sisters of St. Ann own the beautiful 400 acre property that lies at the base of Mount Tzouhalem, in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island. The Vancouver Island Providence Community Association has leased the farm and has developed innovative programs for the community since 1979. Today there are 14 full and part time staff and over 120 participants that come up our driveway each week. The success of our programs is based on the premise that caring for the land together is healing and therapeutic by nature. ?The ultimate goal of farming is not the cultivation of crops, but the growth and development of people?

Vancouver Foundation (Canada)
The Vancouver Foundation is one of the oldest community foundations in North America. Vancouver Foundation was formally established by an Act of the Provincial Legislature - the Vancouver Foundation Act - in 1950. It has grown to become the largest community fund in Canada and the fifth largest in North America. In 2000, Vancouver Foundation is the custodian of 689 funds, which make up its Consolidated Trust Fund with a market value in excess of $610 million. Each year, they distribute approximately $27 million, representing a portion of the income generated from these investments, to organizations and groups that support the Foundation's mandate. Today, Vancouver Foundation seeks to achieve three principal goals: Promote the growth of income from contributed funds to achieve donors' charitable objectives. Encourage and support those charitable organizations best able to carry out activities congruent with the purposes for which the Foundation was established. Provide philanthropic leadership and support endeavors that improve the quality of life in the community.

WISE - Wellbeing thru Inclusion Socially & Economically (Canada)
WISE began in the summer of 2003 as one woman's vision. In exasperation with a system that had no heart "Chris" wrote her story of painful marginalization. With the urging of friends the story came to the attention of an understanding Programs Officer at Status of Women Canada. They convinced Chris to write a proposal for a project. WISE is now a registered nonprofit society whose GOALS include: 1. raising the collective voice of persons living in poverty due to policies of exclusion 2. changing public understanding of poverty as a socioeconomic inevitability, to that of social and economic exclusion 3. having policymakers recognize that the worsening economic situation of an increasing number of British Columbians has a systemic cause Until public understanding of poverty changes, we consider it unlikely that politicians will do more than pay lip service to the increasing problem of poverty in BC.

Exemplary Multicultural Practices In Rural Education (United States)
EMPIRE (Exemplary Multicultural Practices In Rural Education) is a consortium of elementary and secondary schools from multiple school districts in Yakima region of central Washington State. Guided by a leadership team from Heritage College, the goal of this ongoing effort is to bring together educators, students, parents and community members in a collaborative network to encourage positive multicultural attitudes and practices on campus. EMPIRE is helping to educate staff and students about diversity issues. It promotes positive race relations, gender equity, and an appreciation for ethnic and cultural differences. It encourages schools to develop learning environments where children of all backgrounds can be successful. EMPIRE functions through proactive leadership with a grassroots approach that involves schools in designing and implementing their own agendas for change.

The Mission of IGC is to advance the work of progressive organizations and individuals for peace, justice, economic opportunity, human rights, democracy and environmental sustainability through strategic use of online technologies. Today IGC Internet offers progressive individuals and groups a place on the Internet to learn, meet and organize. IGC Internet is changing to take its community of activists and nonprofit professionals into the Internet's next wave by focusing on content, information sharing and new, collaborative tools.

The mission of the Tahirih Justice Center is to enable women and girls who face gender-based violence to access justice. The Center engages in direct litigation, public policy advocacy, and education and outreach to ensure systematic change that protects women and girls from violence.
