| FUNDAEC, Foundation for the Application and Teaching of Sciences (Colombia) |
FUNDAEC, the acronym in Spanish for “The Foundation for the Application and Teaching of the Sciences”, is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization that has dedicated over 30 years to fostering processes of learning, training, and development in the rural areas of Colombia and an increasing number of countries in Latin America.
It is best known by its two main programs—the Tutorial Learning System (better known by its Spanish acronym, SAT), an innovative secondary level educational system used by over 25,000 students throughout the Americas, and the University Center for Rural Well-Being (CUBR).
The “Sistema de Aprendizaje Tutorial”, SAT, is a formal—but flexible—educational program that arose from FUNDAEC’s efforts initiated in 1974, aimed at contributing to the progress of rural communities. The System has developed a methodology which makes it possible for any individual—youth or adult—from the most remote rural region to have access to a secondary-level education par excellence.
The curricular content is organized in 70 texts which, instead of the common practice of covering specific subject matter, are aimed at the development of five fundamental capabilities: mathematical, scientific, language and communication, technological, and those of service to the community.
SAT is made up of three levels, each of two years duration: Promoter, Practitioner, and “Bachiller” in Rural Well-Being. Each level is comprehensive in the sense that the graduates are able to carry out activities of varying degrees of complexity in their own communities.
