This project is designed to build the capacity of the people of Barton Hill, in the mountains of Jamaica, to become self-supporting and improve their standard of living. This is a grass roots project, with the residents of Barton Hill having asked for our assistance. A few dedicated individuals in Victoria, BC are connected to Barton Hill, and working diligently to accompany this community to "get on its feet".
The community is struggling badly; they live in a very isolated part of Jamaica, and the largest and basically, the only employer in the area, laid off 100 employees last year. The lay offs were due to mechanization
These residents have no private or public transportation, live 1.5 hours from the nearest city and few of the children are attending school, due to a lack of money.
June 2012, 150 pounds of vegetable, melon, herb and sunflower seeds have been donated to this Barton Hill community, by another Registered Charity in Victoria, BC. Karen Gould, the Volunteer Project Coordinator for this Jamaican Project is currently seeking donations of any and all sizes to assist in the transportation and distribution of the seeds. If you can assist, please donate online; send a cheque to Partners for Prosperity Society in Shawnigan Lake (MARK on the cheque: for Jamaica); or contact Karen Gould in Victoria. Your assistance WILL make a DIFFERENCE in the lives of these patient and hardworking people.
